Seventh Grade Language Arts



North Carolina’s Standard Course of Study allows for six main goals for seventh graders. Each of these goals has many objectives that make it up.
NC Standard Course of Study
Emphasis is placed on:
· Argumentative research
· Expressing individual perspectives
· Critically analyzing literary works and sources
· Using correct sentence structure and overall grammar
· Interpreting a wide range of literary genres



· Goal 1: Students use language to convey ideas about personal, social, cultural, and historical issues.
o 1.01—Narrate an account that explains significant events, engages the audience, and has an overall flow.
o 1.02—Respond to the work of others by drawing connections, summarizing, creating an artistic representation, generating a learning log/journal, etc.
o 1.03—Learn how to interact in groups by responding to questions, offering opinions without dominating, giving support for opinions, and respecting the opinions of others.
o 1.04—Reflect on self-growth and learning experiences, and understand diverse opinions and beliefs.

· Goal 2: Students learn to use different sources to gain information for decision making and writing.
o 2.01—Comprehend and respond to informational material given in different formats.
o 2.02—Create informational materials (brochures, newsletters, infomercials, etc.) using appropriate sources.

· Goal 3: Students learn how to argue and persuade.
o 3.01—Analyze argumentative works by understanding biases and logistics that make a good argument.
o 3.02—Understand and analyze the Problem-Solution process.
o 3.03—Study and create arguments with strong judgment and logical bases.

· Goal 4: Students evaluate sources for quality, bias, and accuracy.
o 4.01—Analyze the author’s purpose and understand the effects of the author’s writing style on the audience.
o 4.02—Develop (with assistance) criteria to evaluate source through literary or media techniques.
o 4.03—Learn to critique sources and literary views by looking at both sides of the argument and remaining fair.

· Goal 5: Students interpret and evaluate various literary genres.
o 5.01—Increase fluency and comprehension through different reading strategies, depending on the type of text.
o 5.02—Study characteristics of different types of literary genres and be able to differentiate between sorts of literature.

· Goal 6: Students work on grammar and language conventions.
o 6.01—Model an understanding of conventional written and spoken language through variety in sentence structure, using parts of speech correctly, using correct punctuation, and expanding vocabulary.
o 6.02—Continue to identify and edit personal errors in spoken and written language.
